European leadership in e-science and grids

Logo Netherlands EU Chair

The previous workshop on the eInfrastructures initiative and the meeting of the eInfrastructure Reflection Group (eIRG) were held on 18 and 19 november 2004 - as part of a larger whole. A number of pan-European evenements around e-infrastructure, gridtechnology and e-Science took place in The Netherlands around that time under the common header European leadership in e-science and grids.

Preceding these coupled events the annual conference of the 6th Framework Programme of Information Society Technologies (IST 2004) was held – in the week before the workshop and eIRG meeting - from 15 to 17 november 2004. There were several grid-related talks and dissemination activities around grids and e-science at IST.

In conjunction with the rotating EU chair several major (upcoming) European grid projects - EGEE (Enabling Grids for E-science in Europe), DEISA (Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing Applications), SEE-GRID and Diligent (Digital Library Infrastructure on Grid Enabled Technology, in advanced state of negotiation) - each convened in the week of 22-26 november. Also, there was a concertation event for the Grid RI projects on 22-23 november.

The Netherlands as chair of the EU had taken the inititative for a first joint meeting between these groups, to stimulate cooperation and knowledge exchange between participants. On 22 november 2004 the project members met for a packed programme featuring acclaimed grid and e-science experts and other interesting speakers.
